Focusing
on Adam and Violetta, a young couple suffering from AIDS,
this documentary spans a period of six years.
The video depicts the problems attached to this traumatic
disease in Poland. The ready supply of cheap, liquid opiates
has encouraged widespread drug-taking, especially among young
Poles. This circumstance, coupled to the practice of sharing
syringes, is largely responsible for the recent explosive
spread of the HIV virus in Poland and other East European
countries.
In
this intolerant climate it is not surprising that many of
the victims choose to go underground, which of course merely
aggravates the risk of infection. It takes courage to come
out with a disease that society reacts to as though it were
leprosy. And the welfare state in Poland proves to be inadequate
to rescue Adam and Violetta, who are therefore condemned to
destitution. Despite their own predicament, the young couple
find the moral strength to tell their story in the hope of
helping others to avoid disaster
